Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who recently promoted Heng Swee Keat to the role of Deputy Prime Minister, has said that Heng will now take on more political responsibility and play an important role in the next General Election.
The current two DPMs, Teo Chee Hean and Tharman Shanmugaratnam, will relinquish their DPM role come May 1st, and will be appointed Senior Ministers instead, while Heng, touted as the next PM, will assume his DPM role on May 1st. He will be the only DPM by then. PM Lee reiterated that Heng would now set the agenda of the Government (PAP), pitch the government’s stance and policies to the public, and building the younger team and being ready in all respects to take over from PM Lee and the older ministers as soon as possible.
PM Lee also said that he plans on stepping down by the time he reaches 70 years old in 2022. So, Heng has one GE and 3 years to prepare himself as the next PM of Singapore. Or actually, Singapore has one GE and 3 more years to prepare for Heng as the next PM.
